What is MDMA?
MDMA, which stands for 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, is a synthetic drug known by various street names, including ecstasy and molly. It is chemically similar to both stimulants and hallucinogens and is classified as a “psychedelic amphetamine.” MDMA primarily affects the release and reuptake of three neurotransmitters in the brain: serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Its effects can include:
- Euphoria: MDMA often induces feelings of pleasure, empathy, and emotional closeness to others.
- Increased Energy: Users may experience increased alertness and physical energy.
- Heightened Sensory Perception: Sensory experiences, such as touch and sound, may become more intense.
- Altered Time Perception: Time can seem to pass differently for individuals under the influence of MDMA.
- Enhanced Sociability: Many users report feeling more open and connected to others, making it a popular drug in social settings.
