New research, involving millions of people worldwide over decades, adds to worries that heavy use of high-potency cannabis could exacerbate the mental health crisis in the U.S.

Marijuana use is on the rise among young adults, and research is increasingly pointing to a link between marijuana use and mental health problems.

A 2023 study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry found that adolescents who use marijuana are two to four times more likely to develop psychiatric disorders, such as depression and psychosis, than adolescents who don’t use marijuana at all.

Another study, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, found that marijuana use can impair the development of the prefrontal cortex, which is the region of the brain responsible for executive functioning, planning, and decision-making. This impairment can lead to problems with…
